Body modeling with five compartments

Body modeling: new measurements to diagnos potential anomalies

In clinical practice, it has become essential to track changes in body composition. In fact, weight and height are not enough.

Many diseases (undernutrition, heart disease, kidney disease, edema conditions, anorexia, etc.) cannot be detected and treated with these measurements alone. An increase in certain body compartments can hide a decrease in other parameters.

The human body is made up of various elements such as fat, bone, protein and water. In a healthy person, these elements are kept in constant proportions, regardless of the environment. Monitoring these physiological parameters makes it possible to detect anomalies in their distribution and thus prevent diseases such as obesity, anorexia, undernutrition, sarcopenia or edema.

A schematization by compartments

The physiological model allows us to schematize the body using the concept of compartments. These group together functionally related body components, irrespective of their anatomical location or chemical nature. Tissue compartments include fat mass (FM) and fat-free mass (FFM). The FFM contains lean body mass (LBM), itself composed of water (extracellular and intracellular) and protein, and bone mineral content (BMC), as detailed in the figure below.

Body modeling allows precise tracking of weight development by focusing on one of the five main body compartments. The Z-Métrix is validated and allows you to monitor these five compartments independently, thanks to our non-deductive bioimpedance technology.
